August is here and, while I won’t go on vacation yet, I decided to make the most of it. This past weekend I just drove to Praia de Ancora, one of the first Atlantic beaches at the north of the Portuguese shore. Great vibes, relaxed atmosphere and not as crowded as the Mediterranean (the water a little bit colder too.)

With wild beaches, a small fortress (to fight the Spaniards), a nice fish market and plenty of restaurants and beautiful old houses, this spot attracts many Portuguese to enjoy the summer. Nature is also a key point and the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela passes through. Have you been there?

Wish you a great summer with lots of travels. Where will you be going?

Hi Leticia,

We are going to Ancora at the end of June and planning where to go. You mention that there is a lovely fish market – can you tell me where this is and what day of the week?

Thanks in advance,

John

    Hi John,
Nice choice! There is the public market (Mercado Municipal). It opens daily during Summer season (june to september), from 8AM to 6PM (except on Sundays when it closes at 1PM). Address is R. Comandante Almirante Ramos Pereira.

Better option to buy fish “was” (don’t know if it is still on) to go directly where they weight the fish that arrives to Ancora (DocaPesca at Google maps, next to Forte da Lagarteira). They have what they call “mercado de segunda venda” (one of the few places in all Portugal where they kept the tradition) where you can buy fish directly from the fishmongers. They sell the fish from 9AM until the produce is all sold out (around 11AM) but haven’t visited at that time since COVID so don’t know if they have it back or not.

    Hope that helps. Safe travels,
